How to play Poople: the four rules
- Begin with the supplied starting word. The official daily game chooses a starting word for the current puzzle.
- Keep four letters in the same positions. Replace one letter; do not add, remove or rearrange letters.
- Use an accepted word at every step. A spelling that exists in another dictionary may still be absent from the game's word list.
- Reach POOP. The aim is to reach that fixed target using as few letter changes as you can.
You can play the official Poople game in your browser. Poople Wiki provides independent help; it does not host the original daily board or submit guesses to it.
A worked example: COLD to POOP
This is a teaching example, not today's puzzle and not a shortest-path claim:
COLD → CORD → WORD → WOOD → GOOD → GOOP → POOP
- COLD → CORD: change the third letter, L to R.
- CORD → WORD: change the first letter, C to W.
- WORD → WOOD: change the third letter, R to O.
- WOOD → GOOD: change the first letter, W to G.
- GOOD → GOOP: change the fourth letter, D to P.
- GOOP → POOP: change the first letter, G to P.
There are seven words but six moves. Every pair differs in one position, and all the example words were present in the official word-list snapshot checked on October 19, 2026. A shorter route may exist: this example is designed to make each change easy to inspect.
What counts as an invalid move?
COLD → WORD changes two letters, so it cannot be entered as a single move. COLD → COLD changes none and also fails the rule. A five-letter word has the wrong length, even if it looks similar. Rearranging letters counts by the positions that change; sharing the same letters is not enough.
If an apparently sensible word is rejected, check the previous word, the spelling and the game's accepted vocabulary. Replacing a letter correctly does not by itself make the resulting word valid.
Moves, the best solution and par
A move is one transition between two words. The starting word contributes zero moves. The official game compares the completed route with its best-solution length. Some guides call this benchmark “par”; it is not a reward, a time limit or proof that only one route exists.
When we call a route shortest, we identify the dictionary used to prove it. Our independent Poople solver finds a shortest route in its own supported word list. Different word lists can produce different results.
When does Poople reset?
The current official implementation sets the daily change at 08:00 UTC. The corresponding hour in your location can change with daylight saving time. Use the starting word and puzzle number to confirm that you and a guide are discussing the same puzzle.
